Grand Prairie Flight Academy Has Supported 13 Breaking Down Barriers Scholarship Recipients
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – (NOVEMBER 6, 2026) – Spartan Flight Academy (SFA), part of Spartan Education Group (SEG), is proud to recognize its students participating in the Breaking Down Barriers (BDB) scholarship program, an initiative founded by former American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and his wife, Gwen Parker, to remove the financial and awareness barriers that keep talented individuals from communities historically underrepresented in aviation from pursuing careers as pilots.
The initiative was recently featured in a CBS News Texas report, highlighting the organization’s mission to reach students who have the talent and aptitude for a career in aviation but may never have been introduced to it, or been able to afford professional flight training.
As a flight training partner of Breaking Down Barriers, Spartan Flight Academy has provided flight training to 13 scholarship recipients to date, including 10 students currently enrolled in the Part 141 training courses at its Grand Prairie, Texas, location.
Current Breaking Down Barriers scholarship students at Spartan Flight Academy include:
Through Breaking Down Barriers, scholarship recipients receive financial support and access to flight training and mentorship opportunities designed to help them progress toward professional aviation careers. Spartan Flight Academy provides structured flight instruction, experienced instructors, and an educational environment focused on developing the knowledge and skills required of future pilots.
Spartan Flight Academy scholarship recipient Kyra Lee was featured in the CBS News Texas report, sharing how the program has expanded her opportunities in aviation. Her story reflects the broader impact of the scholarship program and the role of financial assistance and mentorship in helping students from underrepresented communities achieve meaningful milestones in aviation.
“At Spartan Flight Academy, we believe that talent, determination, and passion for aviation should be met with opportunity,” said Bob Werderich, Executive Vice President of Spartan Flight Operations. “We are incredibly proud of our Breaking Down Barriers scholarship recipients and the dedication they bring to their training every day. Training 13 scholarship recipients through this initiative reflects our shared commitment to developing the next generation of aviation professionals and creating meaningful pathways into the industry.”
Breaking Down Barriers addresses the obstacles that keep many capable students out of aviation, including the high cost of flight training and limited exposure to aviation as a career path. By identifying promising candidates and connecting them with flight training providers and industry mentors, the organization is working to build a more accessible future for aviation.
The partnership also reflects Spartan Flight Academy’s broader commitment to aviation workforce development. As an FAA-certificated Part 141 pilot school, the academy offers structured pilot training and works with aviation industry partners to help students explore opportunities beyond the classroom and cockpit.
Spartan Flight Academy looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Breaking Down Barriers and celebrating the achievements of its scholarship recipients as they advance through their aviation training journeys.

About Breaking Down Barriers
Breaking Down Barriers (BDB) is a Dallas, Texas-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding access to aviation careers by removing the financial and socioeconomic barriers that prevent talented individuals from pursuing careers as commercial airline pilots. Founded by Doug and Gwen Parker, BDB identifies and supports high-achieving students from underserved and underrepresented communities who demonstrate the aptitude, commitment, and potential to succeed in aviation but lack the financial resources to pursue flight training.
Through aviation education and outreach, hands-on experiences, leadership development, mentorship, simulator-based instruction, educational partnerships, and flight training scholarships, BDB creates pathways from early aviation exposure to professional pilot careers. By partnering with flight schools, colleges, airlines, and industry leaders, BDB helps develop a more accessible aviation workforce while creating opportunities for students to achieve long-term career success and give back to their communities.
Spartan Flight Academy (SFA) offers non-Title IV, non-accredited FAA Part 141 training that is not eligible for federal student aid. SFA operates independently from Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology. Spartan Flight Academy does not guarantee third-party certifications/ratings or employment. Estimated time required assumes a full-time flying schedule, varies by individual, and is not guaranteed. Additional flight hours and certifications are required to be eligible to apply for more advanced opportunities, such as airline pilot positions.
